“Falcon And The Winter Soldier” And Black Culture

Early on in the series, we see this stereotype get addressed. John Walker addresses Falcon like Captain America’s “wingman,” but Sam Wilson isn’t having it. Ironically, Walker’s own friend Lemar has to deal with the same label as he states he’s John’s partner, not his sidekick.

In the comics Falcon and Lemar ARE sidekicks, and even in the MCU we’ve seen Sam fill that role for years. However, this series made it a point to show that Falcon is no longer anyone’s partner, as even Bucky chimes in that they are on equal ground as teammates. The same can be said for Lemar. As subtle as some of the moment were, it was powerful to see the notion of the Black sidekick rejected multiple times.
